By Corky Kilkenny

Russian women cannot wait for International Women's Day celebrations that take place in a grand way each year. This is regarded as one of the biggest holidays that is aimed at re-strengthening the spirit and status of women in the country, and even surpasses the fanfare seen during other holidays like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

March 8th is a significant historic event in Russia, dating back to the year 1917, when the women of the country came together to strike against the gross inequalities meted out by the Russian Empire, and for the millions of soldiers who had laid down their lives in war. If you want to know why the day is charged with so much power and strength, then you should know that it was this strike by the Russian women that sparked off the engine of the Russian Revolution. Russian women showed not only will but also courage in demanding 'bread and peace', making the mighty Russian Empire bend to their resolve and grant them the right to vote. This turned out to be one of the most significant historic achievements for the women of Russia.

The International Women's Day in Russia is marked with a strong streak of feminism and woman power unlike that seen anywhere else. Though the tradition has been transported from the United States, the day assumes different connotations in Russia. Though the political connotations have died down over the years, the day is still popularly recognized as a time to appreciate and pay tribute to women.

The Great Kremlin Palace is a unique example of Russian architecture with elements of various styles, from baroque to classicism which have been incorporated in the palace's interior and are still almost intact today. A wonderful place to visit and a place that brings to life all the ideas that you may have had about the country before your visit. The Kremlin Wall is the defence wall that surrounds the Moscow Kremlin, and what makes it so recognizable are the characteristic notches and its Kremlin towers which makes it one of the most symbolic constructions in the history of Russia. Standing by this structure makes for a highly memorable and thought provoking experience. Moving on to St Petersburg you will find the first building to be constructed in the city of St. Petersburg, The Peter and Paul Fortress which was built in 1703. The Fortress is the most popular tourist destination in St Petersburg.

So what can one expect to pay? For example, based on recent prices obtained from international holiday rental websites, a one bedroom apartment that sleeps four can be rented for about 150 euro per week in the early season. Many apartments and the building are licensed as a three star hotel for comparison. Prices increase in the high season during July and August but are still significantly lower than alternative destinations in Europe. It is therefore well worth looking through a few apartments to decide whether to explore that option as opposed to going through a tour operator or booking a hotel. Chances are that travelers will find something that they like in terms of both quality and price. Why not book for the Most Popular Holidays in Russia?
