The Top Alternative Destinations in the US

By Emily Collins

What are the biggest attractions in the US? Surely the White House and the Statue of Liberty must be high in everyone's minds. They're certainly renowned but we wish to celebrate some of the smaller guys. So shun the White House for the United States Capitol and avoid the crowds at the Statue of Liberty for a relaxing afternoon in Central Park. Here are some alternative highlights for your favourite cities.

Try the United States Capitol instead of the White House

While often confused with the White House, where the President lives, the United States Capitol is its far more accessible neighbour, sitting atop Capitol Hill in Washington DC. The defining feature is its grand dome, made of over million tonnes of cast iron - the interior of which is known as the Capitol Rotunda, and represents the heart of the inner workings of US Congress. The Capitol's sprawling grounds include parks, streets, gardens, and the great Reflection Pool - which many will recognise from the famous scene in the film Forrest Gump, where Jenny and Forrest are reunited after wading out into the water.

Visit Central Park as well as the Statue of Liberty

New York City's main public park opened in 1857 and offered an 843 acre of greenery in the heart of the bustling city. It is one of the largest city parks in the world and probably the most famous after making appearances in countless films and TV shows. Every year more than 30 million visitors flock to the park, making it the most visited urban park in the United States.

Swap the Casinos For the Las Vegas Strip

More than 4 miles of road in the Nevada desert forms the famous Las Vegas Strip, home to bright lights, casinos and cheap hotels, including fifteen of the largest hotels in the world. Replicas of some of the world's most famous attractions are found here.... including a copy of the Statue of Liberty!
