Doll Shopping 101: Dad's Resource

By Angie Marie

What's a dad to do? Your little girl wants a doll for Christmas and you don't where to begin. Maybe she let you know what kind she wanted, but it's too expensive and you need some alternatives. Well dad, you've come to the right article.

I am a D.O.O.D. A Dad of Only Daughters. But, I'd be lying to you if that's why I know things about dolls. In fact, my wife always did this kind of shopping when my girls were younger. My knowledge abut them is very new. Only since I started a doll website because I saw it as a nice niche market. But since, I have become quite the doll expert from all the research I have had to do in order to write the articles. And, since I know some of you Dads might be struggling to find the right gift, I thought I'd share some knowledge.

First, you need to understand that there are many different categories of dolls. Many of them wouldn't interest a young girl, so we'll only focus on the few that would. The categories are baby play dolls, young girl dolls and fashion dolls.

Baby play dolls are the classic baby dolls that little girls like to ride around in their carriages and feed them with toy bottles. You know the ones. They are made of plastic or vinyl and look like babies. If your girls is young, like under 10 at least, she may want a doll like this. There is one possible change, though. These days there are some dolls called newborn dolls or realistic dolls that are all the rage. As the name suggests, they look like actual newborns. So realistic in fact, that some of them are actually ugly like real newborns.

Young girls dolls are the kind that girls want once they're too old to play with baby dolls any more. But, they're call young girl dolls because they look like a little older girl and not a baby. The most popular of them are American Girl dolls. You may have heard of them. They are cute little girls made up in period costumes and have tons of accessories to go with them. The only issue is their price. If that's a concern for you, there are a few knock off brands that girls like, too. They are My Generation dolls and Adora dolls. They are the same 18 inch size and their clothes all fir each other.

Fashion dolls are Barbie dolls and the like. Yes, they are still a hit with young girls. There are other types out there like Bratz dolls. Many of these are getting a bad name these days because of their accentuated sexuality and possible influence on young girls.

Hopefully this article gives you a baseline to start your shopping experience. You can find all these dolls at most stores that sell toys. Of curse, there are a ton of online stores that you can find them.
