Setting Up Your Lot Using Wholesale Christmas Trees New Jersey Farms Grow

By Karen Jones

One great way people have found to make extra money at the end of the year is by opening lots and offering trees for the holidays. Not all entrepreneurs are successful. Some charge too much or have plants that dry out and aren't well shaped. If this is something you think you might like to try, you will need the hardiest wholesale Christmas trees New Jersey farms have to offer.

A common mistake some lots make is opening too early. The day after Thanksgiving may be a tempting time, but plants can dry out before the Christmas holiday actually arrives. Waiting until the first week of December has advantages. You will have a fresher product and spend less money on labor. You can always start advertising right after Thanksgiving.

If you're going to sell trees, you need customers. You may have to get creative to stand out from the competition. Opening early and closing late is convenient for people who work all day. The more security lights you have on the lot the safer customers will feel, and that may entice them to choose your lot over someone else's.

The way you display your trees will be important too. If you have different varieties, you might want to group them together. Many buyers have strong preferences when it comes to the types of plants they are interested in. You want to make them easy to find. You also need to leave enough room between plants so buyers have room to look all around a tree and measure it if they need to.

Your first year you will have to make an investment in supplies. You'll need a good little chainsaw to cut trunks. Loppers, saws, and pruning shears for small branches will be necessary. Smaller supplies like rope, tape, cord, twine, pens, and paper should be kept handy as well.

There are things you can do to stand out from the competition. Be the first in the area to set aside a number of trees and donate them to local community organizations that decorate for families in need. You could offer to delivery to those who are home bound, and pick the same trees up for free after the holidays. Fireproofing may be required, but if it is not, this is a good service to offer customers.

Once the holidays are over and your lot lease is up, it will be time to dismantle the remaining plants and return the lot to its former condition. If you want to lease the land next year, you need to make sure your leave it the way you found it. The rent should be paid in full and all workers paid before you shut the operation down.

A seasonal business can be a real money maker. You have to think ahead however and market your business in a creative way. Even seasonal customers can be loyal, and if you are lucky, you might see some familiar faces next year.
