The Best Ways Of Holidaying On The Greek Islands

By James Holder

When you think of Greece images of the Acropolis and the Parthenon may spring to mind. However there are many other facets to this beautiful country. Holidaying on the Greek Islands can be relaxing and fun. There are many islands to choose from depending on the type of getaway you are looking for.

In the summer months there is an abundance of package tours and charter flights. You can book a hotel or rent or share an apartment. There are just so many possibilities and destinations. Visit your travel agent or search the internet for good deals and information.

Getting to Athens is simple. Many international airlines will fly you there. Some of the bigger resorts now have international standard airports too and certainly if you fly by charter you can land at Rhodes or Corfu for example. Domestic flights from Athens serve the other locations too but the traditional way to get about is by ferry across the blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

If you want to really explore the culture of these resorts then you should avoid the bigger ones which have become popular charter tour destinations. They have lovely beaches and hotels and plenty of activities it is true. However you will not get as much feeling of the real Greece.

Skyros is one of the least visited islands and therefore ideal if you really want to get away from it all. Take your bike along if you want to explore as it is quite a big island with little or no transport facilities. The resorts claim to fame is the grave of the poet Robert Brooke who was buried there in 1915.

Holidaying on the Greek Islands need not mean staying in one place. You can visit several locations within a few days. You can find daily cruises from Athens or you can go island hopping by ferry.
